TROPICS | Going Back

Tropics is making headway on the ambient chillwave style with his dreamy instrumentals. When I first heard this, I was kind of caught in the middle during “Navajo”. It was just a grand opening that sounded like Explosions in the Sky was finishing a song. It had the swooping guitar licks and distant vocals in the background just fading in and out. Not comparing Tropics to Explosions in the Sky but it just caught me off guard. Once I got a better feel for the sound, it really reminded me of a Toro y Moi vibe with a touch of indie rock shoegaze. Just a little.

On a rainy day this could be a good touch to settle your day stuck inside. Track’s like “Parodia Flare” is strictly instrumental and it’s a nice touch to the album here and there without vocals. Not a bad thing of course. A change of pace - you know? The album can get really chillwave’y when “Telassar” comes on but nonetheless, it’s all enjoyable, to me at least. It’s soft spoken and the album progresses track by track. With that in mind, well, in fact, whether you’re listening to this in the background or full fledge all ears listening, this will get to you somehow, someway.
